Psyshology in the Classroom

Psychology, the word was first introduced in about 4th century by a Greek philosopher, Democritus. The word 'psychology' is formed with two words 'psyshe' and 'logus', where the first means 'soul' and the later one 'study of science'. The term 'psychology' etimologically means the 'study of soul'.

In the field of education, it has been described with different aspects. Let's study some of the definitions that are well known:

"Psychology is the science of human behaviour. It includes the application of the science to human behaviour."

"Educational psychology is the application of the psychological findings in the field of education."
These definitions about the term 'psychology' in education clears that it is taken as the study of the human behaviour where we learn how to use or apply science in human behaviour. It studies no other than human nature, human behaviour. Whatever we find in due course of the study of human soul/behaviour, we try to apply them in teaching-learning in educational psychology. Here, one who studies psychology, must work as a doctor to the students to find out their problems. He must treat the students according to their capacity as the doctor does for his patients. Let's see some more definitions:

Educational psyshology is that branch of psychology which deals with teaching and learning. -B. F. Skinner
Educational psychology describes and explains the learning experiences of an individual from birth through old age. _Crow and Crow

Educational psychology is the science of education. -Peel

Yes, endeed, it has been described as the science of education. Educational psychology is mainly for education, how to apply psychology in educaion. As we have already mentioned, a psychologist has to treat the child as the doctor does for the patients. But to treat a child, one should learn the child. Rousseau has explained the teacher student relationship, 'the child is a book which a teacher has to learn from page to page'. But to read a child from page to page, one should know his/her psychology, i.e. his physical, mental, social development stages. How the overall development is happening in ones life is the must that a teacher should know before he starts teaching him.

Now, we may have a question, why the study of psychology is a must for a teacher. As we have mentioned above, we must study psychology to read the child clearly from all aspects. Besides, there are some more reason for what we must study psychology first.

Needs of Psychology for a Teacher

to understand developmental characteristics of children,
to understand the nature of classroom learning,
to understand individual differences,
to understand effective teaching methods,
to understand problems of the child,
to concept the curriculum construction,
to measure the learning outcome.
